Developing Reading skills

There is always a debate about teaching reading at F.E level to students with a learning disability(i.e teach them to use the skills they already have rather than learning using phonics)

Teaching to a student's interest : Now CDs

The 'Now CDs' are quite popular with my students.
I've discovered that there is a website devoted to the NOW CD series which is well worth a visit.




At the top of the home page is a link to each year (beginning with 1983).
The Cd covers are featured and include song titles and track length .
There is also an online quiz about the Now CD series
I've used the CD covers to make a bingo game.This has helped with reading numbers to 74.
I've also created a Now 39 Comprehension E1 worksheet (available on the TES web site)

Storytellers

We have begun to do some story telling in literacy class. Its exciting and rewarding to see the students (who can't read or write independently) develop their own stories. We started by doing number facts about ourselves for example; age, number in family, pets . We presented these like a mind map with added pictures and keywords.Stories were then told using the number facts mind map as a prompt.
This week we used an old resource Living our Lives -Ten stories about the lives of adults with a learning disability with CD- which you may be able to order in the publications section (it didn't work for me!)
I was very interested to come across the website

Writing and Telling Stories for Adults

Reading for Pleasure has just been launched by Niace . The site is primarily a Skills for Life resource but may be relevant if you are working with Adult Entry level groups on developing reading and story writing skills.
It has a section on Story telling which has lesson plans and ideas as well as a Professional Development Unit which can be used towards the Institute of Learning CPD requirement.
The CPD story telling objectives:

To develop an appreciation of the importance of stories for adult learners.
To develop skills in locating stories with relevant themes
To develop an appreciation of the value of visiting storytellers and ways of
using them effectively in the classroom.
To develop an understanding of the value of storytelling as an empathetic
approach.
To develop an appreciation of using community resources.
To gain practical advice on how to get support from local libraries, the arts
council and the local community.

Tell us Your Story ! from CKUK.org has a creative writing resource to download . The download gives ideas for creative writing sessions. It was originally used in a project called Days Like This in 2008 which aimed to get people in Scotland ,including those with learning disabilities writing Personal stories.

Literacy and Numeracy for Reluctant Learners at E3

If you have Entry 3/ Level 1 reluctant learners this interactive resource may be for you. Bling it on develops literacy, language and numeracy skills.

The game was designed to hook reluctant offender learners and their families into a ‘first step to learning’ The subject matter of driving cars was chosen to appeal to male learners and has been piloted in prisons .The developers say the initial feedback has been promising!

Teenage Readers

Tar Heel Reader has a collection of free, easy-to-read, and accessible books on a wide range of topics designed for beginner teenage readers.Its an American site and each book can be speech enabled (with the American accent) It can be accessed using switches, alternative keyboards and touch screens The books may be downloaded.

I have just used I Love You as part of my Valentine's Day Project.We put it on the whiteboard . The readers in the class read page by page by and early readers were able to join with the repeated "I love you" written in every picture .

Letter recognition .

3 letter recognition activities that worked well for me with my adults with learning difficulties at M7 (working within an Entry 1 group)bingo from Worksheet genius . A whole class activity that can be differentiated so that some are learning the name of the letter, some the sound. It can further be supported by writing the letter on the board and using a Learning Assistant to point the letters out on an alphabet card .letter mashup from Sen Teacher Printables. Choose letters from their names to start with. Choose the large text with extra spacing and remove the symbols.












ngfl wales has a good interactive snap game matching lower case letters(other options available)
